‘Behold a virgin shall conceive' / 'O Thou that tellest good tidings to Zion’, ‘Behold the lamb of God’ en ‘He was despised’ uit The Messiah van Georg Friedrich Händel
Het recitatief ‘Behold a virgin shall conceive’ uit het eerste deel van The Messiah betreft de tekst over de geboorte(aankondiging) van de Messias uit Jesaja 7,14 die terugkeert in Mat. 1,23:
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call his name EMMANUEL, God with us.
Nederlandse vertaling:
Zie, de maagd zal zwanger worden en een zoon baren,
en ze zullen Hem de naam Immanuël geven,
wat betekent: God met ons.
Dit recitatief gaat over in de aria ‘O Thou that tellest good tidings to Zion’, op de tekst van Jesaja 40,9:
O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain; O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, and be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
Vervolgens horen we uit Jes. 60,1:
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

Klim op een hoge berg, met uw boodschap van vreugde, Sion,
verhef met kracht uw stem, Jeruzalem, bode van vreugde, verhef haar, en wees niet bang.
Zeg tegen de steden van Juda: ‘Hier is uw God.’
Sta op en schitter, want uw licht is gekomen,
de glorie van de HEER komt over u.
In recitatief 20 en duet 21 (ook uit het eerste deel) horen we meer over het leven van Jezus:
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; and he shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. (uit Jes. 40,11)
Come unto [Him], all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and [He shall] give you rest. Take [his] yoke upon you, and learn of [Him]; for [He is] meek and lowly of heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. [His] yoke is easy, and [his] burden is light. (uit Mat. 11,28-30)
In deel 2 van The Messiah horen we in het koorstuk ‘Behold the lamb of God’ over het lijden van Jezus, evenals in de aansluitende aria, ‘He was despised’:
Behold the lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the world. (Joh. 1,29)
He is despised and rejected of men: a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. (Jes. 53,3)
[He] gave [His] back to the smiters, and [His] cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: [He] hid not [His] face from shame and spitting. (Jes. 50,6)

Daar is het lam van God, dat de zonde van de wereld wegneemt.
Geminacht en gemeden werd hij door de mensen,
man van smarten, met ziekte vertrouwd,
